Honda CRF450X Wins Baja 1000, Looses Dirt Bike Magazine Off Road 450 Shootout?
The April 2007 Dirt Bike Magazine cover story is “Off-Road 450 Shootout”.
The four bikes tested were the Honda CRF450X, the Husaberg FE450, the KTM 450XCW and the Yamaha WR450f.
The CRF450X finished last with Dirt Bike stating the bike “it’s not a racer, and it resists being made into one.” That’s odd, last I checked the CRF450X was cleaning house in all of the off-road desert races. I guess races like the Baja 500 and Baja 1000 were flukes. Look at the entry list of any top level off-road race and I’m sure you’ll find half the field riding Honda. Those that aren’t on a CRF450x yet are still on there XR650s.
They complain mostly about the power and the smog equipment and then tell you how to defeat it and gain some more power. At least they decided the bike was too lean as opposed to that other magazine that thinks it’s too rich stock. Dirt Bike also claims you need about $1,000 worth of motor work to keep up with the KTM. So I flipped to the KTM page to read about it, the guy riding it was wearing pink goggles, nuff said.

…what Honda races and what Joe Lunchbox races are two entirely different bikes…the CRF450x needs more than a grand thrown at it to compete the way KTM and YAMAHA are out of the box…I raced one in the ‘06 1000 and it had me wishing I had raced my XR650R, instead…nice bike, but keep in mind-what Honda races comes from Japan [hga factory], not the shop around the corner…

TO say a Yamaha is ready to go out of the box is laughable at best. Yamaha’s need just as much put into them to make race ready as a Honda.
KTM’s need even more work.
